The Prodigal Son; should it be The Faithful Father?

Looking at my diary last night I was reminded that it if Father’s Day in a couple of weeks. I don’t recall this day from when I was a kid and have just had a quick look on line to see what I could find. It may be that it started in the USA around 1910 and was ‘recognise’ in the UK in the 1970’s. I do not recall ever acknowledging it with my late father.

As often happens, one thought leads to others and I was reminded of the story Jesus told that we generally know as The Parable of the Prodigal Son. A couple of years ago I was presumably thinking along similar lines and wrote the following. I have just read it through again; do take a look and see what you make of it.

The Prodigal Son and others

  1. Jesus told a story about a son,
do you remember? The prodigal one!
But it was about more than one man
I will try and explain if I can.

    2. There was the son, elder brother, and Dad.
Normal people living the life they had.
Then there were friends who helped him to party,
until one day his wallet was empty.

    3. The story, I think, was about them all.
Reading Luke fifteen will help you recall.
A few words about each may be worth sharing,
and we may learn something about caring.

    4. The son wanted his money right away
to travel and live – in time led astray.
He found some friends who helped him have his fun,
until the day all his money was gone

    5. The friends were, perhaps, not all they could be.
Was a free meal ticket all they could, see?
When the money ran out, they dropped him quick,
leaving him stranded and feeling pig sick.

    6. The brothers seem to have been a good man,
though not of the prodigal, a great fan.
He worked so hard and seems not to have balked,
But when the prodigal returned – he sulked.

    7. Can you relate to any of them?
As a mirror of my life, it seems a gem
    Selfish, resentful, using others too,
Will someday sum me up, what about you?

    8. The father I have left until the last
looking out for his son, despite what past.
He waited each day until his son would come,
and opened his arms, a loving welcome.

    9. The story teaches about our weakness
But teaches more about the uniqueness
of Gods amazing love for everyone,
as daily he looks to welcome us home.

    10. When like the prodigal we come to see
that with our Father, is where we should be.
Let’s set our eyes on our heavenly home,
assured of the welcome that is to come
