Psalm 90 – Time

Psalm 90 10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Time and what it means has been on my mind in recent days. It started with a conversation with one of my brothers. Following heath difficulties and accidents he has lost most of his mobility and next month he reaches 85 years. He asked me “Am I getting old” and I responded that no he isn’t, he has got old as he is certainly beyond the threescore years and 10 and even the fourscore. We could laugh about it.

Recently a man and his mother who we know both passed from this life within a few days of each other. The mother well beyond her three-score years and ten but the son well short of it. A reminder that none of us know how many days we have on earth.

Last week we celebrated our 61st wedding anniversary in a low-key way Last year we made a big thing of it at 60 years (Diamond), as we did at 50 years (Golden), 40 years (Ruby) and 25 years (Silver). This set me thinking about why we make a fuss over some years and not others. 60 years was amazing but surely 61 years even more so and I know I am so thankful that we are still together after these years and all they have contained.

And then I have watched a bit of Springwatch on the BBC and seen how incredibly short is the life span of some species.

This morning the Our Daily Bread Bible reading notes focused on Revelation 21, 1-5. A reminder that there is life beyond our death here on earth, an eternal life. This set me thinking, yet again, about just what eternal life will be loke. Once again my mind cannot cope with it as it is beyond our conception when this life is so geared to time,

I was reminded of something I wrote a few years ago and I offer it as something to maybe make you think

Serving Time – Ecclesiastes chapter 3; 1-8

1. Time rules our life from conception to death.

We have no control over the amount we have.

Sometimes it will fly and sometimes drag.

We use time; we spend time, we waste time;

We give time; we kill time; we rush time.

We want to move time on or turn it back,

But neither is possible.

2.When we pass from this life to eternal life,

will there be time?

I try to imagine eternity without time.

No time and so no looking back with regret.

No future and so no energy and urgency planning forward.

The now living revelation chapter 5; 13,

rejoicing in the present and the presence of God.

3.Is there a lesson here for the life in time?

To stop dwelling on the past?

to learn from it but accept it cannot be changed!

Accept that too often life has not reflected my plans.

Trust God for the future.

accept the words of Jeremiah 29: 11.

Above all live and rejoice in the present.

Above all live and rejoice in the presence of God.
